My Personal Journey to Become a Certified Health Coach
Having spent my entire adult life in high stress jobs, taking limited care of myself and expecting the many medical professionals that I saw to take ultimate responsibility for the list of problems that I referred to as ‘my health’, I had a radical change in my thinking. Several years after the initial MS diagnosis that seemed at least on some level like an answer to my lifelong list of ailments, I was given the (even less fun than usual) news by my consultant neurologist that I was on a ‘trajectory of increasing disability’. That conversation gave me the push I needed to learn all I could about how to optimise my own well-being, because I felt so strongly that there must be something beyond the medical options I was being offered. I quickly realised how much there really was that I could do to improve things by making changes that were completely within my own control. In many ways I have my mixed bag of autoimmune and other health challenges (which also include Coeliac Disease and thyroid dysfunction) to thank for bringing things into focus for me and setting me on a new path so, while it may sound strange, I am grateful.
I am now in the best health of my life, and still on a trajectory of cumulative improvements! I am not coping with life in spite of my conditions but rather living well with them, and continuing to aim even higher both for myself and my family. After several years of continued learning, I discovered that there was a way that I could use my new understanding to support others. It is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate the overwhelming amount of health related information that is thrown at us on a daily basis, especially in the age of sometimes misleading and often contradictory clickbait headlines. I am passionate about helping people to avoid the most frustrating parts of struggling through this process alone. As soon as I learned about the growing field of health coaching, I knew that this was the perfect way for me to become a part of the change that is so desperately needed in order to enable people to take control of their own health.
I am excited to have the opportunity both to help others facing the challenges of chronic health conditions, and to work with people who are keen to prevent such problems occurring in the first place. As a coach who is also an autoimmune patient and an AIP Certified Coach, I am able to offer deep listening, respect, empathy, support, education and guidance to those dealing with autoimmune and other chronic diseases. We can work together to identify, prioritise and implement dietary and lifestyle changes to create the best conditions for healing, and on developing self-advocacy skills when working with doctors and other medical professionals.
As a former primary school teacher and a parent, I am also committed to working with families and schools in order to help parents, teachers, caregivers and children to understand how simple and rewarding healthy choices can be. Group coaching, as well as more personalised work with families and individuals, can provide unique and valuable opportunities to give children of any age an incredible and empowering boost of both knowledge and nutrition, which can support them in making their own informed choices throughout their lives.
As someone slightly obsessed with learning, I am delighted to be currently in the process of adding to my existing certifications by training as an ADAPT Certified Functional Health Coach (A-CFHC). I have gained a huge amount from being part of this incredible coaching community, including a wealth of in-depth knowledge about functional medicine and ancestral health. I am due to be fully certified with this credential by early 2021.
I am bound by both the Scope of Practice outlined by the UK Health Coaches Association, and by that of the ADAPT Certified Functional Health Coach training program. I am fully insured to practice worldwide through Balens.
